My Fitness Mission Statement

March 11, 2013

There is a go-to word I’ve been finding myself using a lot lately for everything I’m doing in life, including running … “PURPOSE.” Why are we doing what we’re doing? Or, why aren’t we doing what we should be doing? For many of us who run, it’s easy to get so caught up in preparing for our next race or fixating on a certain time or pace goal that we forget why we’re here. Why we started running in the first place. What is our purpose for doing what we do?

Carla from MizFitOnline recently posted about the importance of having a Fitness Mission Statement. She explained that while she has a mission statement for many aspects of her life (e.g. personal, professional, etc.), having a happy and healthy body can help us be more successful in achieving all our other missions.

So what is a Fitness Mission Statement? Here is some guidance from Carla:

  • It is an answer to the question: Why are we here? What is the point?
  • It includes several sentences that identify what your healthy living focus is and whom you desire to be in the fitness part of your life.
  • It should be quantifiable, not vague, and should include a goal with an action.
  • It should be specific, yet brief – no more than 3 to 4 sentences.
  • It should be positive. Don’t include things about yourself you don’t like. Instead, focus on the end state you want to achieve.

The hope is that your Fitness Mission Statement will not only inspire you to stay on track, but when you read it you will feel motivated … every single time.

Carla’s post inspired me to think about my own Fitness Mission Statement. I know it isn’t perfect, and it will likely continue to evolve, but I wanted to share my Fitness Mission Statement with you.

Man do I need of these! My mission statement will probably revolve around more positive self-awareness of my body not focusing on the way in focusing on the work I put into it and also respecting my body a bit more and not killing it with a work out when I need to rest. Also to motivate others and inspire others to be active and healthy naturally

I think we should all have a fitness mission statement. It really helps keep you focused.

I really really like this!! I think this is awesome to help people stay on goal and focused on what the BIG picture is!! 🙂

I LOVE this idea! Most of the time, when I am looking at a non-profit or some organization’s website, I blur over the mission statement because it is vague and doesn’t tell me as much about the group as their projects. But this is fun to be real to yourself, so you are not just signing up for every race or just running without a purpose everyday.

I need one of these. Right now I just want to define my habits. Something to work on this week. Thanks 🙂

I need one of these too! Awesome and inspiring way to stay focused on the big picture!

This is great! Thank you for sharing. I especially love the tips to help making your own. Have a great week girl.

Loving this!

Love this! My mission statement is: “Nothing less.” It doesn’t follow all of the guidelines above – it’s not very specific or quantifiable – or even a real sentence – so maybe it’s not actually a mission statement 🙂 but it has always helped keep me inspired and focused on my purpose. It reminds me that I should give nothing less than my best and nothing less than I have. Love yours!

Gina

This is a great idea! I really like the ‘balanced discipline’ part of yours….that would be in mine as well. I try to always remember not too take myself so seriously that running becomes not fun anymore. Really like this idea and will write one of my own.

Great blog by the way!

Thank you so much Gina! I’m glad this idea resonated with you too, and I can’t wait to read your fitness mission statement when it is ready. Thank you also for your incredibly kind words about my blog. You’ve made my day! xoxo Happy running!

My Fitness Mission Statement

I commit to living a joyful life filled with integrity, purpose and passion. I will continually discover through education and practices how to achieve and maintain a healthy body both physically and mentally and maintain a plan for a lifetime of sustainability. Sharing with others what I have learned and continually growing and learning myself. My healthy food and activity choices will sustain me mentally and physically. I will focus on what I do have and will always remember that all past experiences have brought me to this place and time and have made me who I am. I am fearfully and wonderfully made! Through my actions I set an amazing example for my friends and followers, and my umbrella of love and caring is always expanding.
