Weekly Training Recap: The Snowpocalypse

February 3, 2014

If you live in the northern part of the world, 3 inches of snow is a drop in the bucket. You’re used to driving in it and running in it, and your streets are always prepared for it. If you live in a warm, sunny climate like my friends from Florida, you probably haven’t seen 3 inches of snow since you went on your last ski trip or holiday vacation to see Aunt Millie (or insert the appropriate family member here). Here where I live in Atlanta, snow is one of those things that rarely happens. Once a year we get a little dusting that never really sticks – except for every 4 to 5 years when we are hit with a snowpocalypse that sends our city to a standstill and bans every runner to the treadmill for days.

Last week, a state of emergency was called in Georgia due to all the snow. People were stuck in their cars for more than 12 hours trying to get home from work. Many had to abandon their vehicles on the side of the interstate and then walk miles to get to a safe, warm place. Others chose to sleep in their vehicles, in which it was 15 degrees because they were nearly out of gas from being on the roads so long. Hundreds of parents couldn’t get to their children, who were forced to sleep at their schools with the dedicated teachers and administrators who stayed to keep them safe. People died. People were injured. One woman lost her leg trying to push her vehicle with her elderly family member inside across the ice. For those who are used to the snow, this was no laughing matter.

When it came to my workouts last week, I found myself snowed in like so many others. Running just didn’t seem important compared to what so many were going through. From Tuesday through Friday, our roads and sidewalks were covered in ice, so most of my workouts had to be completed in doors.

With just 4 weeks to go until the Albany Marathon, every workout counts. Here’s how last week’s training went:

weekly training recap on runladylike.com

MONDAY
REST

TUESDAY
Ran 4.77 miles of speed work on the treadmill:
Slow warm-up mile followed by 5 to 10 minutes of dynamic stretching
3 x 1-mile repeats at 6:53/mile pace with a 400-meter recovery walk between each
Short cool down and static stretching.

WEDNESDAY
Biked 9.88 miles with an easy spin on the trainer, keeping my cadence around 90 rpms

THURSDAY
5.5-mile run on the treadmill
This was supposed to be a 10-mile run with about 6 tempo miles thrown in. However, since we were banned to our house and weren’t able to leave, we were down to nearly no food after being in California the week before. All I ate were eggs and some Clif Shot Bloks all day. I literally ran out of gas on this run. You will be glad to know our pantry is now fully stocked.

FRIDAY
REST

SATURDAY
16-mile hilly run at 8:34/mile average pace, with about 6 race pace miles thrown in during the middle portion of the run

SUNDAY
10-mile ride on a stationary bike followed by the California Crusher upper body workout and 15 minutes of ab work

sunday workout

How did your training go last week? What do you do to get your miles in when you are snowed in?

I got snowed in as well, but had less ice on my roads. I managed to still run a snowy nine and a half miles from Tuesday to Thursday. Could not do much else as I live in the middle of nowhere. Still got something done. Sounds like you had a good week.

Great job getting your workouts in!

Katie

I live in MN and still don’t love running in the snow! While I can’t remember a state of emergency, I still tend to head the Y when the weather is less than ideal!

I hope this isn’t bragging but I totally rocked my runs last week. Up here in Seattle it’s been cool (40’s), and overcast with some nice sunbreaks. During the week though I run on the treadmill because it’s dark before and after work and I feel safest at home. But my 9 mile run on Saturday was outside and it was amazing. Hope you’re back to a temperate climate and on the pavement soon!

Carson

The snow totaled ruined my training last week, here in Alabama. I got snowed in at the hospital where I work and wasn’t even able to hit up a treadmill because of long working hours. Just part of the job, I guess!

rUnladylike

Oh no, Carson! That just means that this week will be better! We all have those weeks! Just throw last week out the window and start fresh today. Happy running and training!

Atlanta was all over the news about how crazy the snow / reactions were. Hope everything has settled down!

Leslie @ Triathlete Treats

Looks like you had a great week of training despite the snow!! I still couldn’t believe me eyes when I saw that your main interstate was closed!! Crazy!!
My training week was good! It has to be almost zero believe with ice all over the ground for me to run on the deathmill!! 🙂

Lacy @ Running Limit-less

We had quite the snow here too but nothing like ATL! I heard about everything down there and said a little prayer for everyone. It is crazy how snow affects the southern states. I hope you guys didn’t have much trouble. It is always bad with the Interstate in Hotlanta closes down! At least you got in your workouts though indoors.

Ashley @ Brocblog

Thank goodness we didn’t have any sort of snow/ ice nonsense. Gotta love so cal. I’m sorry to hear about how bad it was there!

Janelle @ Run With No Regrets

I didn’t hear about a woman losing her leg…wow. It’s hard to imagine 3 inches of snow doing so much damage, but it definitely is no laughing matter. It’s great that you were able to rock it last week regardless!

Courtney

It just now rose above negative teens (that’s not with windchill) and 20 degrees felt like a heat wave today!! With all the school cancelations and delays I was stuck on the TM for a couple weeks. Are you using the FIRST program (looks similar)? I’m trying that for my next half in April and the progress I’ve made in just 4 weeks has been crazy!

rUnladylike

Hi Courtney! It is hard for me to complain when you are facing those cold temps day-in and day-out 🙂 Stay warm! Yes, I do integrate the FIRST program concepts from Run Less Run Faster into my training. Although I adapt it for my needs, I am religious about using their training paces based on current 5K time. That coupled with triathlon training has made a huge impact for me. It helped me realize how much more I could push myself while staying safe/healthy and keeping injury prevention top of mind. Glad to hear it is working for you!

Amanda @runtothefinish

ok I know the snow is driving you all crazy, but the pictures are pretty 🙂
i would have been very grouchy with only eggs and shot bloks…especially since I can’t eat eggs!
