The Firecracker 400

July 5, 2015

In my family, the Fourth of July has always started with a workout. For years, the Peachtree Road Race was the only way to officially kick off this patriotic holiday. Now, we spend the weekend at the lake with family … but old traditions die hard. Just because there was no race to wake up to and no medal to chase, we still find our own way to honor our freedom to run.

If you’re looking for a short workout that lights up your day, try our Firecracker 400. This is how we started our July 4 this year. Begin with a 4-mile run (you can scale this back based on your current fitness level or available time). Then complete 4 rounds of 25 squats, 25 push-ups and 25 sit-ups for a total of 100 reps each. You can do the push-ups on your knees if you need a modification. The run counts as your fourth 100. I never said I was good at math. *wink*

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday weekend surrounded by family and friends!

How did you celebrate the Fourth of July? Do you typically run or exercise on Independence Day?

Looks like a super fun 4th of July!! Love your outfit and what a great workout to start a holiday!
I normally run in our local 4th of July race (5k or 10k). This year our family went and the kids did the kid’s race! It was so fun for them!! Then there was a huge parade, followed by a BBQ at our friend’s home and then fireworks (and a nap in between all of that for my 2 year old). It was a perfect day!!!

Looks like fun! Our 4th was really low key this year. We usually go out of town, but my boys wanted to stay home, to be with their friends, so I did a few runs at home and a race today. It was nice to have nothing on the agenda. I even got a few naps in!

I love when you can pull your family into your fitness world! I usually set up a boot camp in my garage when my brother and his family are here. I’m not sure who would actually make it though the 4 miler but I would give it try 🙂

Great way to start with a workout.
This was my first year at Peachtree.

Congrats on your first Peachtree Abby! Your weekend looked so fun and I’m glad you got to experience the event!

I love how you bring your family into your fitness and running! The workout sounds perfect for a holiday – enough to get a good sweat, but not enough to take away from other activities. Our Fourth was spent hiking at the Mount Baker National Forest in the Cascades.
