Inside My Running Beauty Bag

September 12, 2015

For more than a decade, I woke up every day, put on make-up and high heels and drove to an office. Shower. Straighten hair. Eye shadow. Mascara. Lip gloss. Jewelry. Rushing. Blazer. Rushing. Pencil skirt. Damn these stilettos hurt. Still rushing to get out the door.

Nearly two years ago, I transitioned into a new role that allows me to work remotely from my home office. It has changed my life. Less time rushing and more time to focus on priorities. More time to run. More time to work. More time to be with family.

However, the part of me that didn’t spend half my day being unladylike has pretty much gone out the window. These days, my work attire consists mostly of running clothes and ponytails, and sometimes even pajamas. My daily routine no longer includes make-up, and I haven’t worn a pair of heels on a weekday in as long as I can remember.

But that doesn’t prevent me from still wanting to feel fresh. Countless hours of running and working out lead to dehydrated skin, sweaty hair, sun exposure and tired feet. So, instead of talking about all the things I love related to running, I thought for once it would be fun to share all the things I love and use that are not related to running – the beauty products for runners that keep me a tad more ladylike than unladylike.

8 Non-Running Products Runners Will Love

Here’s a peek inside my beauty bag and eight products I use daily that every runner is sure to love.

1. Beauty Counter Essential Face Collection and Face Oil
One of the things I’m trying to do a better job of is immediately washing my face after a run or workout, especially since I always wear a visor when I run and the sweat can build up on my forehead. All the running often dehydrates my skin as well, especially in the hot and humid Florida weather. During the past year or so, my complexion has been looking less than stellar. I’ve tried many products to clean and moisturize my face, but I haven’t found anything I love. Until now.

Last month, I started using Beauty Counter’s Essential Face Collection, and I’m in love. One of my best friends is a consultant and she let me borrow all the products to try for a week. After seven days, I was hooked. I immediately purchased the essential face collection and the luster face oil.

The face collection includes six products: a gentle cleanser, an exfoliating cleanser, a rosewater uplifting spray to refresh, a day and night cream and an anytime eye cream. Additionally, the face oil can be combined with the moisturizer or used alone to nourish and deeply moisturize skin. I don’t know if it’s the type-A in me that loves the routine or just how clean and fresh my skin looks, but I am obsessed with my Beauty Counter face products and routine.

The best part is that they have healthier ingredients than the majority of products you’ll find at the drug store. They even have a “never list” of ingredients you will never find in their products (love!). The downside is that everything they sell is incredibly expensive. It was more than $250 for the seven products I’m currently using. That is massively more than what I was paying before. If I love these products as much in three months as I do now, I will continue investing in it. After all, this is the only face I get to have.

2. Mama Exhilarating Sugar Scrub
This all-natural, vegan peppermint sugar scrub is one of my absolute favorite things. I discovered it while living in Atlanta since it is made locally, and I use it at least twice a week on my legs and arms. Not only does it exfoliate, but it leaves skin so moisturized. The best part? The only ingredients are pure cane sugar, coconut oil, sweet almond oil, raw unrefined shea butter, botanicals, peppermint and rosemary essential oils and vitamin E. I love supporting small businesses and this one is the best. They also have all-natural lip balms, lotions and many other products that I’ve tried and liked. It typically retails for $19.99.

3. Eureka Balm
Another all-natural product local to Atlanta is this awesome balm that can be used to reduce congestion, ease headaches, reduce muscle soreness and relieve burns/stings. I first discovered Eureka Balm in a local shop when living in Atlanta, and I always carry it with me in my purse. I often dab a little bit on my nostrils and breathe it in. The only ingredients are: shea butter, menthol, wintergreen, beeswax, camphor, and cedarleaf. It retails at $7.

4. Rodan + Fields Redefine Lip Renewing Serum
Running outside and changing weather constantly leaves my lips feeling dry and chapped. One of my friends introduced me to this awesome lip renewing serum, and I use it every night. The jar comes with 60 little capsules that you can pierce (I bite the end with my teeth) and put on your lips before you go to bed. I can typically get two uses out of one capsule, which doubles its lifespan since each jar costs $54. It’s designed to retain lips’ natural moisture, smooth lip texture and reduce the appearance of lip wrinkles with peptide and antioxidant-rich ingredients.

5. CeraVe Renewing SA Cream
When we first moved to Florida from Atlanta, we rented a place on the beach for a few months. I was naturally out in the sun and sand more than usual. My sister-in-law introduced me to this gloriously thick lotion while we were out there, and it is the most moisturizing body cream I’ve ever used. Although it also comes in a pump, I like the 12-ounce pot/jar. It’s designed to help repair and restore extremely dry, rough or bumpy skin and is said to provide controlled release over time with ceramides that moisturize and soften. It’s fragrance-free as well.

6. Essie Mademoiselle Nail Polish
Lately, I’ve exclusively been wearing this soft, natural pink Essie color on my nails and toes. I absolutely love it. It gives such a finished look while being completely natural. It even looks good on ugly runner toes.

7. Mary Kay Love Lash Mascara and Lip Gloss
When it comes to make-up, these are my two must-have items. They are great because they give a really natural look when used on their own, or a beautiful finished look when used with foundation, eye shadow, eye-liner and the whole face. My mom is a Mary Kay consultant and she first introduced them to me several years ago. Best mascara ($15) and lip gloss (color café au lait, $15) ever. The prices are also very reasonable.

8. Neti Pot
You know how you love to hate your foam roller? Well, that’s exactly how I feel about the neti pot. I have a deviated septum and have always suffered from sinus problems, which in turn causes me to have dark circles under my eyes. My primary care physician recommended I start using a neti pot to improve sinus function, and the woman who I see for facials also suggested it to help reduce the darkness under my eyes. So, I’ve started using one again with saline packets. It’s not the most fun, but if it helps, I’m willing to try anything. I purchased mine at Walgreen’s and use distilled water with it. If you don’t know what a neti pot is, google it. It’s kind of terrible but effective.
