Back At It: Weekly Training Recap

December 17, 2015

2015 has been my year of running for fun. Sure, it included three half marathons and three 5K races, but they were all completed with no goals and on a base of easy running. If I’ve learned anything this year, it’s that “easy” and “fun” aren’t exactly how I want to run. I want to work hard, push beyond my comfort zone, dream big and crush goals. Is it ironic or fitting that I waited until the last month of the year to start training for a race?

My first week of training for the Sedona Half Marathon and Gasparilla Half Marathon (both in February) is in the books. Here’s what my past week of training looked like.

  • Monday: Ran 4 up tempo evening miles … Running while looking at Christmas lights is my favorite thing right now!

  • Tuesday: AM: 1 hour at Pure Barre via ClassPass + 3 recovery miles; PM: 60-minute sports massage (I’ve been getting weekly massages this month to provide extra care to my calves, feet and hips.)
  • Wednesday: 1 hour of spinning with my friend Stephanie. I tried a new studio called SoHo Cycling in Tampa via ClassPass. This studio plays music videos on big screens during class, which was great for keeping my mind off the pain.

I love this inspiration wall in SoHo Cycling.
  • Thursday: Ran 8 easy miles after work
  • Friday: 75 minutes of restorative yoga at Green Locus Yoga via ClassPass
  • Saturday: 1 hour of strength and interval training at Bodyssey via ClassPass (my favorite strength training studio anywhere!!!). This was hands down one of the hardest workouts I have ever done. We had to do four sets of 15 reps of about 10 different exercises with a different running interval/sprint between each that increased in distance and then went back down. I was down for the count after this workout. I would estimate I did about 1 to 1.5 miles of running during class.

  • Sunday: Ran 7.12 slow recovery miles. My mom ran the Holiday Halfathon half marathon on Sunday (her eighth half marathon!). I spectated for the first half and then jumped in and ran the second half of her race with her.

We with my mom around mile 9 … she does 2 minutes of running and 1 minute of walking for her intervals. We were on a walk interval.
