Hey Monday, You Just Got Your Ass Kicked

August 6, 2012

Yep, today never stood a chance. After hitting the wall a much-needed day off yesterday, I was determined to start this week off strong. And that’s exactly what I did: I kicked Monday’s ass.

I started the day with a 5:45 a.m. wake-up call and 22.5 miles on my bike. In the middle of this 90-minute ride, I did 50 minutes of intervals – 5 minutes at a hard climb followed by an easy 5-minute spin. I repeated that 5 times. I looked like I had been swimming after I finished.

After an 8-hour work day, I headed to the gym for my second workout: 5.5 miles of speed work on the treadmill. After a short warm-up, I ran 7 3-minute sprints followed by a 3-minute recovery jog. I ran the first 5 sprints at a 6:54 pace and the last 2 at 6:49. After a short cool-down, I looked like I had been swimming. Again.

Today’s personal victory really has nothing to do with my workouts themselves or how strong I felt. The real win is that no matter how bad yesterday was, we can all make tomorrow better. All it takes is one choice. One day. One step. One workout. And just like that, you’re back on track. It can seem really hard, and sometimes it is. But all it takes is one day. Just focus on the day in front of you, and you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish.

Today I kicked Monday’s ass and have completely forgotten about yesterday. Maybe I’ll double down and see what I can do to Tuesday *wink*!

How do you tackle Mondays? What’s your strategy for bouncing back after a bad workout, less than stellar training week or simply a much-needed day off?

EPIC! You crazy, awesome woman. Monday got kicked by you 😉

I have a rest day on Monday, which drives me nuts, but now it’s Tuesday, and I started the day with a 10km run, so I feel pretty proud of that!

Thank you so much Kate!!! It sounds like your Tuesday was pretty great too. Congrats on kicking it off with a 10K. Your rock!

I couldn’t agree more that no matter how bad the previous day was, it doesn’t determine the future. Keep it up!
