Running Where Dreams Come True

November 28, 2012

It’s the “happiest place on Earth.” The place “where dreams come true.” So does running at Disney feel magical? Does it result in a dream pace? Well, not exactly.

I’ve been at Walt Disney World for the last 3 days on our annual trip to Disney. (It’s a long story but Mr. rUnladylike is obsessed with Disney, and we go during Christmas time every year. No, we don’t have kids yet. Yes, I’m serious. Yes, I know it’s kind of weird. Yes, I do also enjoy it. *wink*)

This was us at Disney back in 2009. We’ve gone every November or December since 2005.

After my confession on Sunday that last week was less than stellar in the health and running department, I was determined to make this week awesome. And, knowing that no amount of Tinkerbelle’s pixie dust would do the work for me, I decided a healthy and happy week would start at Disney.

I had several goals for this week, one of which was to work out at least twice while at Disney. So how did it go? (Drum roll please ….) I worked out 3 times. Every morning we were there. Take that Thanksgiving “try-to-derail-me” week.

Day 1

On our first morning at Disney, we went for a 5-mile run. We started at the Contemporary Resort, where a large Christmas tree flanked by 2 American flags stood guard. We ran by the Magic Kingdom, through the Polynesian Resort, along the perimeter of Bay Lake and around the Grand Floridian Resort (including the wedding pavilion). We then ran back the opposite way, doing another loop that included views of Space Mountain.

Clockwise starting in the upper left corner: View of the Grand Floridian from Bay Lake at the Polynesian Resort, the common interstate-like roads surrounding Disney (not ideal for running), the path through the Polynesian Resort, the path around the Contemporary Resort, a sign I saw along the route, the wedding chapel at the Grand Floridian, the start of our run at the Contemporary

My average pace was 8:40, but each mile was a little slower than the first (do as I say, not as I do). I didn’t eat anything before we ran and I was a bit dehydrated. So, needless to say, this was not the run where dreams came true. But 5 miles is 5 miles. I’ll take it. We finished up by doing 15 minutes of ab work before heading to Epcot for the day.

Day 2

On our second morning in Disney, we worked out at the Contemporary Resort’s gym. I did a strength and speed workout that looked like this:

Day 3

On our third and final morning at Disney, we went for a 30-minute run and did some more strength work, focusing on legs and abs. The Contemporary Resort has a 0.89-mile jogging path that we ran around 4 times.

Views from our run around the Contemporary Resort

We then set up shop at the beach and did 5 sets of 20 squats, 20 lunges (10 per leg) and 20 step-ups, followed by 3 sets of crunches, leg raises and side planks.

And don’t worry, all the exercise didn’t derail the fun. It’s just proof that travel doesn’t have to unravel your exercise and training goals. Thank you, Mickey.

Have you ever run one of the Disney races? If so, what did you think? If you do strength work, what is your favorite workout?

Kat

Awesome! Can’t wait to do Disney runs in January and February!

You will do great Kat!!!

Lisa @ RunWiki

My husband and I went to Disney when he returned home from Iraq, before we had kids… we haven’t been back since! ha! we love it! Looks like you had your own #RunDisney all the fun minus the finisher medal. I’ve never done a Disney race, I really would love too, but they’re so expensive, I can’t handle the price tag. btw you’re gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!

rUnladylike

Sounds like you need to get back there, Lisa. And you can just create your own RunDisney race too 🙂 Thank you for your super kind words! xoxo

Hahah! Loved this. If y’all are weird, I am insane because I worked there for 4 years, still love it, and still go about 2X a year.

rUnladylike

LOVE that you worked there. How cool! Glad there are lots of us out there 🙂 Happy running!

meghan @ little girl in the big world

Congrats on getting all your workouts in on vacation! Hopefully it’ll be more magical for the Walt Disney World Marathon in January! It’ll be my first full! You did awesome finding so many different things to do, and though it may not have been the best, the views were pretty good!

rUnladylike

SO excited for you Meghan. You will do GREAT! I can’t wait to hear all about your race. Good luck with training through the holidays. Just a few more weeks left! You will love it, sans the getting up so early 🙂

I’m just jealous that your husband is a Disney fan! Mine is so-so with Disney (hates the commercialization), but I grew up with Mickey and Donald (Princesses not so much) and I am bummed that we can’t get to go.

Beka @ rebecca roams

I have never run at Disney, but it looks like an awesome time 🙂 Congrats on you for passing your 2x goal 😉
I think it’s awesome your husband is a Disney fan! My bf grew up and spent more time in Orlando during his college years so he is “mickey mouse’d” out. Blasphemy I say! I loveeee Epcot!

rUnladylike

Thanks, Beka! I’ll be in Tampa this month and hoping I’ll get to meet/run with you and Kat 🙂

First of all, looks like *somebody* learned a new photo editing process. I like it! Second, you are literally the first person I have seen doing a squat in which you actually look strong and capable and not, well, not like you have “other” things on your mind. THIRD, it is completely NOT weird that y’all like Disney pre-kids. It is a totally magical place. My sister is a HUGE Dis-nerd and I am not too far behind. There are tons of fun things to do without kiddos present. Just. Magical. I am looking forward to doing the Disney Half Marathon in January!

rUnladylike

So excited for you to run the Disney Half Marathon! You will do great!!! Hope you’ll be blinged out with some sparkle for the race!

Kate

I would LOVE to run DIsney. Gimmicky or not ;-). In fact, I’d love to just go to Disneyland/world, whatever. Its super cute that Mr rUnladylike still loves it. And you too of course!

Amy

I did Expedition Everest with my mom this year as a team. It’s their 5k obstacle course and scavenger hunt through animal kingdom at night. It’s so so fun! My mom and I are doing it again next year. They also have a race after party and open up the big rides at animal kingdom for you.

rUnladylike

That’s awesome, Amy! My husband and I ran the Tower of Terror 13K a few years ago before it became the 10-miler. It was at night and they kept the park open until 2 a.m. just for the runners and their spectators. It was such a cool experience to cross the finish line and immediately get on a roller coaster 🙂 Glad you guys had a blast at your race. Good luck next year!

Sarah @RunFarGirl

We LOVE Disney World, especially Sophia! And I love running the trails around the resorts. I really want to do the Disney Princess Half, eventually.

rUnladylike

I want to run that race too! Maybe we can run it the same year!
