Running through Molasses

March 1, 2015

I can’t remember the last time I went 7 consecutive days without running.

Well, until now.

The flu kicked my butt last week, and yesterday was the first day in 7 days I went for a run.

It felt like running through molasses.

It felt like I hadn’t run in a year.

I had no gas in the tank.

My legs felt like lead.

Insert all the other slow, painful running clichés you can think of here. That’s what this no-good, molassesy run was like.

But it was a run.

It was with friends.

It was on a clear, crisp morning surrounded by a rushing river and lots of other runners.

And a run that’s as slow and painful as running through molasses is always better than no run at all.

How was your week of running last week? How do you bounce back to training after a week of being sick?

I ran out of gas on my long run today, too! It was so sunny (but cold) here in MN and I was just praying to enjoy it a little! I had a stomach bug that pushed my marathon training out a day or two.

Alyssa

I had a great week until Friday when I was just so tired that I fell asleep at 8.30 and stayed asleep straight through till 6 am on Saturday! Glad you’re on the upswing from the flu 🙂

Nicole

That’s the worst!!! I’ve been there and it’ll get better!

Those runs are so rough, but it always seems that then the next run is way better! Hope your next run isn’t through molasses 🙂
I had a sluggish long run this week, my legs just had a lot of fatigue in them from a higher mileage week. It’s these slow and hard runs that make us really appreciate the good runs!

Allie

Just seeing the sun and green trees and water that isn’t frozen makes me want to run for miles!!! Coming back from sickness is definitely hard. You know you will be back to your old self in no time. Good to see that you can enjoy the company and the run for what it is though. Nice job!

I’m not sure what’s worse Allie … running while still sick (and/or being sick) or having to deal with the ongoing winter weather you have had to deal with. Hang in there mama! xoxo

elizabeth

running post sickness is never fun-just glad you are back at it!! my week kicked some A! PR city 🙂

I’m SO proud of you Elizabeth!!!! I’m just SO thankful I didn’t get you sick before your race. I was stressing about that. xo

I ditto the thoughts of Allie regarding green grass and trees with leaves! I am so SICK of this Philadelphia weather. There is only ONE trail that is plowed, so I have been endlessly running on that all winter. Normal temps of 45 are in the 10 day forecast so I am PRAYING for normal temps. February was our 7th coldest February on record. Ugghh! Hope you are feeling better soon!
