Big Changes: Farewell Atlanta

April 13, 2015

March 15, 2006, was an exciting day. With a U-Haul trailer hitched to the back of my boyfriend’s SUV (that boyfriend was Mr. rUnladylike who became my husband 3+ years later), I followed him in my car as we drove from Tallahassee, Florida, to Atlanta, Georiga, to start a new journey. Everything was new and shiny and exciting. Infinite opportunities were waiting to be discovered.

For more than 9 years, I’ve called Atlanta home.

Farewell Atlanta on runladylike.com

In less than a month, I’ll be saying goodbye.

It’s a bittersweet feeling – opening the door to another exciting adventure, yet closing the door on a place that has defined so many aspects of my life and the person I have become.

Atlanta is where I got married.

Atlanta is where I joined a community of everyday athletes that was stronger than anything I’ve ever known.

Atlanta is where I did things I once thought were impossible.

Atlanta is where I discovered who I am and who I want to be.

In just 4 short weeks, I’m going to be like that younger version of myself back in 2006. With Mr. rUnladylike once again by my side, we’ll turn the key in the lock of our beautiful home and say goodbye for the last time. We’ll drive away from all the friends and memories and Saturday morning group runs that have become such an integral part of my life.

And we’ll start to make new ones.

Next month, we’ll start a new journey in Tampa, Florida. As we take steps to start a family, we know being close to our families is where we really belong. We both grew up in the Tampa Bay area, and we’re finally coming home.

I have admittedly shed a few tears. Ok, a lot of tears. Don’t get me wrong, I’m more excited than sad or scared, but I’m going to miss some aspects of my life here beyond words – and most importantly, the people who have shaped that life (you all know who you are).

On the running front, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous. Will I find the deep running community I’ve come to know and love here? Will I find women I love to run with and who can run with me stride for stride – running friends who get you and know everything you’re thinking without even having to say it? Will Saturday mornings be filled with the same joy the past 4 years have brought?

I’m confident the answer is yes. But the running community I’ve come to know and love in Atlanta will never be replaceable. Elizabeth, Tricia, Amy L., Amy W., Teesha, Tammy, Katie, Andrea … all of you others who know who you are … thank you for making my past decade in Atlanta and my many runs here so meaningful.

In honor of my farewell to Atlanta, I’ll be sharing some Atlanta-inspired posts during the next few weeks, including the best places to run, best running and triathlon stores, best fitness studios/workouts and best places to eat in Atlanta for runners and athletes.

So let’s raise our bottles of Gatorade and electrolyte-spiked beverages: Here’s to a new adventure in Tampa. If you live in Tampa or the surrounding area, I hope you’ll reach out to me so we can meet up for a run.

If you’ve ever lived in Tampa, where do you think are the best places to run? Best running groups? Best running stores? How did you adjust after a big move from a city you lived in for many years?

Awwww it is always sad leaving your home, I know I have done it multiple times, but you will always cherish those memories, and when you visit it will be extra special 🙂 TAMPA! That is where steve and I are planning on going for a little vacation this summer!!! See you there?!! 🙂

rUnladylike

Thanks Tina! You will have to let me know when you are there. We could run together … Your recovery run could be my tempo day. Ha! xoxoxoxo

Allie

Wow!! It’s so bittersweet!! I can’t imagine all the emotions you’re working though on a daily (possibly hourly) basis. The last place I moved from was Los Angeles, almost 15 years ago and it was really hard. I moved home as well and it was the best thing I ever did. Good luck getting though the move but, when planning a family, I think the very best and most important thing is being near YOUR family. It’s going to be an incredible journey!

Pam and Christine

Having moved many times due to job transfers for my husband, I totally understand your emotions even with the excitement of being closer to your families. Friendships are hard to replicate as well as special things in any location that you live. You will be very lucky to start out in a new place with loved ones around you!

Smitha @ FauxRunner

I’m so sad even though I’m happy for you 🙁 🙁
I’ll miss you.

rUnladylike

Thank you so much Smitha! I’m so glad we’ve gotten to know each other. You are a bright shiny sunbeam in this city and the running community! xoxo

Sara @ LovingOnTheRun

Moving is never easy, but I know you will find a great support system and running community in Tampa! How exciting for you! Just look at it as a new and exciting adventure!

Katie

You are so loved and will be missed. I know that you will do wonderfully well in Tampa and am so happy that you are making a move to be close to family. God bless you on this exciting journey, Jes!

rUnladylike

Awe! Thank you so much Katie. It has been such a joy to get to know you and run with you these past few years. I will always cherish all our fun Saturday morning’s together. We’ll have one last hurrah here before the end of the month and I’ll be sure to come visit you guys. xoxoxoxoxo

EB @ Running on E

Congrats! You will be greatly missed here in Atlanta! I know that Tampa has a large and strong running community that is lucky to have you!

rUnladylike

Thank you so much Elisabeth! I will be cheering you on virtually for all your awesome running adventures. I’m so glad we got to meet at Ragnar. It’s been a fun ride. xoxo

Katie

I just moved from Memphis to St. Petersburg a week ago, so I can totally and completely identify with your situation! I was in Memphis for 7 years and loved our running and tri community. I’m hoping to find a new family here! I’d love to get together when you arrive and get settled. How do I get in touch?

rUnladylike

Hi Katie! Congrats on your move! I hope you’re liking St. Pete so far!!! Feel free to email me at runladylike@gmail.com. I love meeting new runner friends! xo

Katy Widrick

I just moved to St. Pete as well — 4th and Gandy! How exciting (and it sounds like we need to plan a meetup soon!).

brittany

I, for one, am thrilled you’re coming home! Can’t wait for the new chapter ahead!!

rUnladylike

Thank you Britty! So, so excited to be able to see the Lindquist crew more. Love you!

Liz Cox

I’m so happy and excited for you. We are hoping to be moving this summer as well, closer to family to a place that will put us closer to nature. I’m sure all will be well and you will attract beautiful people like you. God bless you as you transition to your new home!

Jamie king

My husband and I just moved to Portland, or from San Francisco, ca – left behind nearly 15 years of memories and of course my sweat friends. I’ve been having the same thoughts….who will I run with? Sweat with? Workout with…? But I know it’ll come with time (and for you too!). Great post, btw, and congrats on the big changes!

So exciting!

rUnladylike

Thank you so much Jamie! Congrats on your move. Both incredible cities (I’m jealous!!!). We’ll find our ways at the same time and I know we both will. You’ll have to keep me posted on how your new running community is and how it all goes. Thanks for the kind words and support. Best of luck to you too!!! xo

Ash Diamond

Luckily there are LOTS of amazing ladies in Tampa like Katy Widrick and Meghann Anderson who I am sure you probably follow or know already! Good luck!

rUnladylike

Thank you Ash! Yes, I know Katy and Meghann online and in real life and I’m very excited to hopefully see them more. Thanks for the kind words! xo

Mary

Know it’s hard to leave ATL but I am SO excited to have you back in FLORIDA! Know you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for in Tampa or you’ll create it! XOXO

rUnladylike

Thank you so much, my friend! And this means I’ll get to see you and your great family pretty much whenever we want … which is AMAZING! Here’s to finally coming down to your beach house. Love you!

Alyssa

You will ABSOLUTELY find an amazing running community in Tampa. I have missed my Florida running family SO much since we moved away last year. Check out the Blue Sharks during the summer/fall for marathon training season, Flatwoods and Upper Tampa Bay Trails, Bayshore and Davis Island are great routes by the water…I could go on and on! ENJOY!

rUnladylike

Thank you SO much for all the recommendations Alyssa! I really appreciate it and will definitely check them out. Hope your transition is going well. xoxo

Beth @ RUNNING around my kitchen

Wow, congratulations! I know big moves are bittersweet, but it is for a good reason and it’s an exciting time. Best of luck!!!

Mike Podracky

Best wishes for your new adventure. I know you will be taking your writing skills and clever blog with you, so that’s a good thing. Family is so important. My grandson just moved to Charleston with his parents for a job transfer, and I miss them a lot. Once your own family starts to grow, you will have very happy parents/relatives.

Brooke @ sweats & sweets

I remember when my boyfriend (now husband for 4 years) moved away from our home just 45 minutes north of Atlanta (I’ve always been a OTP resident of Georgia) to Florida, then we had a chance to move back to GA to Savannah, then 2 years later back to Alpharetta. I was beyond excited, but sad too. I know leaving this great city is hard, but so very worth it to be close to family again. We moved away in 2009 and finally moved back in 2013 and I would never give up that chance again. Y’all are doing the right then and of course you’ll meet a new community that will welcome you with open arms, and you’ll have a community to return to on visits!

Dietitian Jess

It is always tough to leave a place you called home but you definitely wont regret being closer to family as you start your family (that is my plan too- eventually). Wishing you the best on your move!

Katy Widrick

wait for REAL???

You know that I *just* moved to St. Petersburg, right? As in, 15 minutes outside of Tampa? We HAVE to chat!

rUnladylike

Yay Katy! This is the best news all day! I am so excited about the chance to get to see you more and run together (and attend some of your fitness classes)! Can’t wait. I’ll send you an email as it gets closer so we can get together. We’ll be in South Tampa. xoxoxoxoxo

Sarah @ SarahRuns26

Good luck! What a fun new adventure! Changes are always a huge mix of emotions – enjoy your last few weeks in Atlanta!

Ben J

I didn’t realize you lived in Tallahassee before Atlanta. My wife and I lived in Tallahassee for two years (2006-07). In fact, when we left Tallahassee, it was to move back north to be near family for when we started our own family. We moved back to Rochester, NY, which is where we both went to college and where her entire family lives.

As sad as we were to leave our friends and some of the things we loved about Tallahassee, it has been a great decision to move back home. Having family nearby has been crucial as we raise our two daughters. I don’t know how people raise kids without other family nearby.

Also, you always need to do what’s best for you because you never know when somebody else’s circumstances will change. Since we left Tallahassee, all of the closest friends we had there have also left.

Good luck with the move, and with starting a family. And don’t let having kids make you stop doing the things you and your husband love doing.

Pam

It is so bittersweet! Great blog post (as usual), and with Facebook, Twitter & Blogs, people really aren’t as far away as they use to be. Atlanta is losing a great person and Tampa Bay is gaining a wonderful one. I’m sure you will do awesome as usual there, and it’s always nice to be back home.

Allison D.

I have been a west coaster for 14 years but grew up in Atlanta so have enjoyed reading your ATL activities and being reminded of my original hometown. There is nothing like having family close by once you have kids and I currently run with all women that I met through mom running groups!

Rubi

You are such an inspiration, a wonderful blogger I enjoy following, sad to hear you’re leaving a great community but happy to know you’re going to be closer to your family. I am excited to meet you, your mom is one amazing lady who also inspires and motivates me ♡
I look forward to meeting you! Rubi ( FAB 50 )

rUnladylike

Thank you for your incredibly kind words, Rubi! That means a lot to me. I look forward to hopefully meeting you when we move to Florida. My mom is amazing and I’m so lucky to have her 🙂 Keep up the great work with your running! xo

Nicole

AwW so many memories! we moved recently to make room for our baby and I was so sad – and we only moved 3 miles away (but now I can’t hear the waves from my bedroom – boohoo!). I’m sure you’re going through so many emotions but I know you’ll start a new wonderful life in Tampa and im confident you’ll make new running friends!

Angie

How exciting although I understand your tears! My husband and I met in Arizona, lived there for 15 years, then had our first baby there. But we wanted to raise our family next to ours, so we moved all the way to Philly. It was hard to leave our life behind, but to see our children grow up with their 18 (yes 18) cousins is so worth it. Good luck! You have some big changes coming up but your strength will get ya through it!

Amy L.

I’m in denial – but I have to be honest – this brought tears.

rUnladylike

I know, Amy. I’m so, so, so glad we met back in 2012 training for Augusta. I’ll always remember us getting into the water together. I know we’ll be friends forever, so I look forward to cheering you on virtually for all the many amazing things that lie ahead for you. xoxo

Carly @ Fine Fit Day

Oh so bittersweet!! I’ve lived here for 15 years, but moving from Australia was a BIG adjustment. You will find your running tribe, I’m sure and it will be so great to be close to your family. It will be an adventure!!!

Melanie

Best. Post. Ever. I know the transition will be tough but know that you have a support system waiting to get you through the tough times. I want you to be my running coach! So happy you are coming to tampa and will be thinking of you through the move. Love you!

Kristen L

What an exciting new adventure! I know moving from a place you love is always hard, but in sure you will come to love your new home as well. Best of luck with the move!!

Laura @ This Runner's Recipes

Moving is never easy, but being close to family is so important! Best wishes to you and Mr. Runladylike on your move and new beginnings!
My husband and I have a big move coming up also – leaving the town where he grew up, we went to college, met, and got married for the metro Seattle area. So I very much understand your emotions on the move – moving is both exciting and heartbreaking to leave a special place.

Kristin @ A Mom on the Run

So bittersweet! Good luck with your move and the transition – I have no doubt that you’ll find a wonderful community of runners in Tampa!

neil

Your house looks awesome. What part of Atlanta is it in? My wife and I (and 2 kids) moved to ATL from Boston 4 years ago and we often chat about downsizing and moving into a cool looking house when our kids leave the nest (10-15 years from now). We currently live in the standard brink 4 and door homes in East Cobb.

Best of luck on your move and new adventures. When we were considering our move a friend said to us that is will always be better wherever you go.

Lora @ Crazy Running Girl

This is exciting! We recently did the same thing, after living in NYC for 3.5+ years, made the jump to TX to be closer to family. I admit, I was nervous! But it’s turned out great and there’s nothing better than being close to family. 🙂

Genna

yay and Congrats! You will find exactly what you need here! You will have the support of your family and loved ones! What will you be doing once you move here?

rUnladylike

Thanks Genna! I am the VP of marketing communications for a large national nonprofit. I work remotely in Atlanta and will continue to work in the same role remotely from Tampa. Looking forward to it 🙂

Kim W

We will miss you Jesica and wish you and your husband every happiness in your new adventure! Tampa is such an awesome city…another thing you and I have in common since I grew up there too! You will love the Gasparella races in February and I’m sure you will find an amazing running community waiting for you! Blessings my friend!

Maria Lopez

Wow, this is exciting! I live in Tampa. It would be great to meet up one day. I’m sure it will happen eventually if you end up training with any running or tri groups around here.

rUnladylike

Hi Maria! That would be awesome. I love meeting readers and fellow runners, and I’m always looking for new running buddies. If you have any recommendations on running groups, I’m all ears. You can connect with me on Twitter and Facebook or email me at runladylike@gmail.com. I’m staying down on the beach until we find a house, so doing a lot of running on Gulf Blvd. lately. I’ve also met some friends in the Safety Harbor area. Can’t wait to get to South Tampa for good. xoxo

P.S. Haven’t been doing much swimming and biking, but I’ve got my bike with me and plan to do some riding down here. No way I could keep up with you though. LOL
