Every Day is National Running Day

June 3, 2015

Today is National Running Day – a day created to unite the entire running community to reflect on the reasons we run, to celebrate runners of all abilities and to share the many things that make us grateful and joyful about our sport. It’s wonderful that there’s a national holiday to celebrate our great passion, but I can’t help but feel the same way I do on Valentine’s Day and Thanksgiving … the sentiment surrounding this holiday is something we should be living every day.

Today shouldn’t be different than any other day, because we should be celebrating National Running Day every day.

National Running Day

Every day we should lift each other up and cheer each other on.

Every day we should soak up the reasons we run and not take it for granted.

Every day we should feel grateful for the friends running has brought into our life – the ones who have supported us and gotten us through the best and the worst moments.

Every day we should remember those who can’t run or those we’ve lost and work a little harder in their honor.

Every day we should be thankful for the amazing things we’ve all accomplished and will accomplish – whether that’s running a mile for the first time without stopping or running a personal best marathon. For most of us, we’ve done some things that we likely believed were impossible at one point or another.

Every day we should have fun and find joy in our miles, even on the hard days.

National Running Day should be the same as every other day. Live life to the fullest, be in the moment of every run, learn from the good and bad miles and be grateful to be part of the coolest, most inspiring community on the planet. Run on runners.

Are you doing anything special to celebrate National Running Day today? What are the daily things you do to live the spirit of National Running Day every day?

I couldn’t agree with you more and I’m proud to say that I actually do this every.single.day. I never take my ability to run for granted and, when things get really hard out there (and they always do!) I think of all the people who would love to be doing what I can do every day. Running is a gift and I love today and everyday. Thanks Jesica!

Haha we really did write the same post today! Love it though! Happy running day, every day- and thanks for always inspiring!!

I completely agree with this post! Each day I’m filled with such gratitude that I can run, because there are so many people who can’t and that breaks my heart. At its essence, running is about movement, freedom, and joy, and you’ve definitely captured that!

Jesica – great post! I completely agree about National Running Day and other holidays! It is fun to have a special day of recognition, but the sentiments are something each day should have already (thankfulness, love, & a RUN! 🙂 ). I celebrated by running this morning! Each day I try to remember how thankful I am that I am able to run and enjoy the beauty around me and the companionship of my husband, family, or close friends during a run!

I celebrate every day I can still run at 62, and take nothing for granted. On tough workout days, I just look a picture of myself when I was 58 and weighed 212 lbs and realize nothing is too tough now. Now at 160, I know it’s a cliche, but I am happy to be alive and healthy enough to enjoy the running lifestyle I have embraced the last four years. As we all know, our dedication to this sport involves much more than just the time spent in our running shoes, rather it requires the discipline to eat well and take proper care of our bodies with virtually everything we do. Running has been the best decision I made, since my retirement from the working world. I want to be like that 92 year old woman who just ran the San Diego Marathon, and I have 30 years to get there. The joy on her face at the finish line said it all.

So very true! I am so thankful every day that I am able to run and feel fortunate tohave met so many wonderful friends through the running community both on and offline 🙂 Happy running day today and every day!

Love this article. I did make sure to run yesterday, and I remembered mostly to be grateful that I can. I have so many friends and loved ones who can’t, who would give anything to be able to run even as slow as I do. And I remembered to be grateful for people like you, who share the love with me, not just of the sport, but what the sport can do for our souls.

Abby

Yes, love this! Every day is a great day to be a runner.

I love this Jesica! I did not run yesterday as I thought a swim would be the best “first workout post Raleigh 70.3” for me, but I could not agree with all your points in the post more! I had the opportunity for LOTS of reflection on the HOT run leg at this past Sunday’s race. Always grateful that I am able to run (and swim and bike) and that it is a big part of my life!

Congrats on Raleigh Lee! I can’t wait to read your race recap!!!

Christine @ Love, Life, Surf

Love this. You’re absolutely right!Every day we should be grateful for the run. Especially as I’m coming back to running, I’m thankful for every run and for my body – even when it’s not cooperating with me!

Gabrielle from Austria

I absolutely love this. I’m thankful every day.I got the book “running strong” that you recommended, and wow, this book is awesome! Just came right.
Thank you, Jesica!
