Why I’m Doing Hammer and Chisel + the 21 Day Fix

January 5, 2016

“Your desire to change has to be greater than your desire to stay the same.”

I found myself nodding vigorously as I heard these words. Powerful words. The fitness instructor leading my workout DVD was saying this while torturing me with an insanely intense glute exercise that consisted of weighted one-legged squats with the other leg on a bench. Even after my glute nearly burned off, I appreciated her words. They seem so simple, and yet, they are so profound and so true.

I’ve always believed that every day is a chance to be our best, to get back on track if we’ve veered off the path and start or improve our health and fitness journey. I’m not a big New Year’s resolution setter, but I have to admit – there is something special about January. A clean slate.

There is one goal from last year in which I failed miserably: clean eating. I didn’t fuel my body to be my best self or to maximize my fitness and running. I was inconsistent at best, eating healthy for a week and then falling – no crashing – off the wagon. I’m a very healthy person. I try to make good choices 90 percent of the time. But some alien took over my stomach and will power in 2015 (I swear!), especially toward the end of last year. My choices left me feeling unhappy with myself … which spirals into being unhappy with lots of other things, most notably my running and self perceptions.

With a new year and a clean slate, I decided to do something about it. But I never thought it would be this.

Rewind to several months ago …

“Ugh, not another one,” I silently groaned as I saw a message about Beachbody pop up in my social media news feed for the billionth time. Has every person I’ve ever known suddenly become a “coach” without experience or knowledge about fitness and nutrition? If I saw one more post about Beachbody (a popular fitness company that sells fitness plans, DVDs, protein powder and more), I was considering deleting my Facebook account. Ok, I would never abandon Facebook, but it was getting a little annoying.

The next thing I knew, several of my friends got hooked and signed up to sell their products. They told me about it and shared their experiences and results with me. I listened, and smiled and secretly thought about running and what I perceived to be harder workouts I was doing on my own. Beachbody and this thing called the 21 Day Fix left my mind, until another friend tried it and told me about it.

I was finally getting intrigued.

Fast forward to December.

I was tired of making poor eating choices and needed something to inspire me. A goal. Structure. Oh how this competitive gal loves a challenge with structure and rules to achieve. With no goal marathon to train for at the moment, I wanted – needed – a new challenge.

And so here we are. I’m doing a 60-day strength training regimen called Hammer and Chisel and following a nutrition plan called the 21 Day Fix that helps you focus on portion control and eating the right amounts of veggies, fruits, proteins, carbs, healthy fats and oils each day.

Why I'm doing the 21-Day Fix and Hammer and Chisel

“Your desire to change has to be greater than your desire to stay the same.” Those words were from Autumn, one of the fitness instructors in my Hammer and Chisel DVDs.

I started on January 1. After five days in, I love it. Who would have thunk it.

My Goals

Why am I doing this? I’m certainly not trying to be crazy or restrictive. I’m not trying to lose a lot of weight. I realize I’m at a very healthy weight, but that doesn’t mean I’ve been making healthy choices.

Here’s what I’m hoping to accomplish by eating clean and focusing on a lot of strength training during the next 60 days with Hammer and Chisel and the 21 Day Fix:

  • Fuel my body with food that’s real, wholesome and will improve my overall well-being to feel, sleep and run better. This includes eliminating most processed foods and sugar that isn’t from natural sources. It also includes portion control. I fall into the lowest end of the calorie plan for the 21 Day Fix. Given my high activity level and the additional running I do, I’ve bumped myself up to the next calorie bracket which adds an additional serving of carbs, fruit, veggies and nut butters each day to ensure I’m getting enough fuel.
  • Consistently strength train to become a stronger runner … and yes, because I want more definition in my arms and abs. Who doesn’t dream of getting ripped? You’re a liar if you’re not raising your hand right now. Through Hammer and Chisel, I’ll be doing more strength training than I’ve ever done on a regular weekly basis. I will continue running 20-25 miles per week and training for my upcoming February half marathon.
  • Run happier. I believe if I do A and B above, it will translate into better running. Being stronger and eating cleaner has always enhanced my running performance.

I will share my weekly training recaps and will update you on what I’m eating and what clean recipes pass my taste test. I’ll also be sharing a recap with before and after pictures, measurements and weight changes at the 30 and 60-day mark. This is the part where I question why I wanted to start a fitness blog and be an open book for all the world to see. Can I put my shirt back on yet!?!

Here’s my starting point. 60 days from now I hope to have a six-pack and some triceps to show you. *wink*

Lora @ Crazy Running Girl

I have a few friends that are doing Hammer and Chisel and it sounds intense! I too fell off the healthy eating track at the end of last year and am so mad at myself. Getting back into it hasn’t been too hard, I feel like I’m craving it! 🙂 Can’t wait to see your results!

Allie

You are one of the only people I would even consider taking seriously about Beachbody anything. I’m intrigued and definitely looking forward to future posts on this…

rUnladylike

LOL! My new goal is now to “get as ripped as Allie.” xoxo

Kimberly @ Healthy Strides

I’m pretty sure you read my mind about the whole Beachbody stuff. It’s so unfortunate, too, because there are some good workouts available! I just can’t stand the MLM and coaching aspect.

While not a resolution, I’m actually made a mish-mash diet plan from “21-Day Fix,” Dr. Ian Smith’s “Shred” and “The 17-Day Diet.” I’m so tired of the baby weight and holiday excess. I just saw that Avon has their own plastic storage containers that fit the 21-Day Fix (and at a decent price) so I might be getting those to help make things easier.

We’ve got this!

rUnladylike

That sounds awesome Kim. I love your goals for 2016. We’ve got this girl! xo

Meghan

I did 21 Day Fix last year and had great success. I will probably also do it again at some point this year. Glad you like it. I felt the same way about Beachbody before I tried that program. The workouts are really legit too.

rUnladylike

Glad to hear you liked it and had success Meghan. Seems like it will be something great to do to help lose baby weight too. We need to get together this year and I’d love to meet baby girl Campagna!!! xoxo

Christine @ Love, Life, Surf

I chuckled reading this only because I have like the exact same post going up tomorrow except about how I’m doing the Whole30. I totally get this Jes. I’m 23 days into my 30 days and I feel so.much.better. I’m really glad that I did this and hit the reset button and took back control over my eating. You’re going to do great!!

rUnladylike

I have been keeping tabs on your Whole 30 process. I did that two years ago and I truly think it was one of the hardest challenges I’ve ever done. I can’t wait to see your recap at the end. The good thing about 21 Day Fix is that you can still have grains and healthy carbs as well as things like beans, so brown rice, potatoes, whole wheat crackers, etc. are in as well as dairy. Those two things have a huge effect on me. The difference is that I’m eating less of them and small portions, which is the game-changer. When I can’t have them I feel a little crazy. I had fewer headaches, more energy and slept better on Whole 30. Doesn’t it feel so great to eat clean? It amazes me how once you do it for a few days, you feel in control again and have your will power back. Good luck with the last 7 days. You’ve got this! xoxo

AmyC

I have always been interested but 1) hate paying for things I think I can find free online and 2) thought I wouldn’t have time to “plan” all parts of the meals.

That said, I’ve seen person after person posting success pics and remarks and been totally jealous! I’d love to know how the planning works for you. Good luck!

rUnladylike

I hear you Amy! I will definitely plan to share some of the meals/snacks, recipes and food prep that is easy and is working for me during the next few weeks. Stay tuned. xo

Hattie

We have almost the exact same story! I am a runner and I used to eat fairly well most of the time. If I chose low quality food, I justified that choice by running more. At my worst, I was running to make poor eating choices. I also have some serious running goals: some challenging trail races of 25K or more, and a first marathon on the horizon. I knew I needed to add-in strength training, but I needed a framework. Googling workouts every ime I felt inspired was not working. I also have very few people who are willing to talk with me about running/fitness/health.

So, on a particularly bad morning, I did it. I contacted one of the bazillion facebook friends I knew who was a coach and asked my “tough” questions. Like, what’s with these shakes? And all this weird lingo? And I wanted to be able to eat normal food. And I wanted the workouts to be legit and not just for people looking to lose a significant amount of weight. I wanted to be challenged. And I wanted to do the workouts as they fit into my schedule, and not sacrifice my training plan.

I’m eight weeks in, down 5-6 lbs. stronger than I’ve ever been, and totally rocking my runs. I love chatting with the other women in my group, sharing recipes, and by golly, I love the shakes! It’s been great and I’ve just started Hammer and Chisel, which is my favorite program so far (though I continue to sample them all depending on my mood and needs for that day).

Put simply: I was a skeptic and have drunk the shakeology along with everyone else. I am in it. For a long time, I think.

rUnladylike

Hi Hattie! Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your story and experience with me. I’m so glad to hear you have had success and are still running even stronger! Woo hoo! Sounds like you have an amazing year on tap with your races! Wishing you the best of luck with your training and clean eating. Keep me posted on your progress. Glad to be connected. xo

Natalie

This is awesome!!! I can’t wait to follow along and see your progress – you are going to do great!! I am about to embark on a eating reset also and really focus on nutrition for marathon training. So excited for you!! You are going to be so ready for the half marathon!! xo
PS: Love your new Launch shoes and can’t wait to get a pair! 🙂

rUnladylike

Thanks so much Natalie! I really like the Launch 3s. My friends at Brooks sent them to me as a Christmas gift and they are really great. Light weight but solid at the same time. They are a little too neutral for me to run in but I use them as my cross-training shoes and absolutely love them. I can’t wait to try the new PureCadence 5 in the next two months!!! xo

Angela @ Happy Fit Mama

If you are still in love with the program and have results after 60 days, then I’m going to need to seriously rethink my thoughts on Beachbody. And I’ll be your first client when you become a coach. 🙂

rUnladylike

Haha! I will not be becoming a BB coach. 🙂 Half marathon and marathon coaching is the only coaching for me. I will definitely keep you posted on my results though. Hope your year is off to a great start. xoxo

Sue @ This Mama Runs for Cupcakes

I feel like I could have written this post! I’m with you on the BB coach thing, but I have been using their DVD’s for years and I really like them. I just ordered Hammer and Chisel and sooo excited to give it a shot. Like you, this is the first year in a long time that I won’t be training for a marathon and I feel a bit lost, but excited about trying something new. I look forward to following your progress!!

rUnladylike

Hi Sue! I’m so glad you are liking the DVDs. There really are some amazing strength training workouts that can complement and enhance our running strength. Let me know what you think of Hammer and Chisel. I’m liking it so far. The one thing I was surprised by is how short some of the workouts are, so the ones without cardio are perfect for a run in the morning and strength train in the afternoon or evening without feeling like you’ve done too many intense workouts on the same day. Some are 40 minutes while others are just 25 minutes. Keep me posted on your progress. Glad to be connected. Let’s do this. xoxo

Mike Podracky

I had my first running injury in five years when I tore my gastroc/calf muscle two months ago. Walking boot two weeks, no running for three more weeks, and then just walking for another week. Thank god I was able to start running again last week. Not running for two months got to me mentally, so of course my knowledgeable reaction was to eat crappy food more. This intelligent decision coupled with no running added 11 lbs to the number I see on my scale. I went to a local nutritionist to set up an eating plan to get back on track. My discipline while injured sucked and I definitely needed a restart. I have been so mad at myself for this lack of discipline.

rUnladylike

Hi Mike! I’m so sorry about your injury. They are so incredibly frustrating, and I think they lead us down a road of feeling blue, which in turn often leads to bad decisions. My mom experienced that earlier this year, and I think perhaps my month off of running in October also triggered it for me. Awesome to hear you hired a nutritionist and it sounds like you have a great plan to tackle everything. Try not to beat yourself up too much. Focus that energy and passion on what you are doing now vs. wasting another second on what you wish you hadn’t done in the past. You will lose that extra weight in no time. Hope you are pain free. Thanks for sharing!

Lisa J

I did 2 rounds of 21 day fix last spring and had GREAT results, and then with buying house and festivities of summer, things detoured.
Considering you are one of the most disciplined individuals I know, you are going to have amazing results!

rUnladylike

I’m so glad to hear it worked for you Lisa! I hear you on house stuff and holidays. I’m hoping our move in two months won’t derail me too much. My favorite part is just feeling in control of my food choices again and not allowing myself to go down a path of decisions I will regret later while still feeling satisfied. Of course, it’s always one day at a time. Wishing you an amazing 2016 and hope our paths will cross this year!!! Hugs!

Lindsey aka Freckles

Thank you for posting this! I have been considering implementing a modified Beachbody workout to supplement my running, specifically P90X3. I cannot wait to see your progress with Hammer and Chisel.

rUnladylike

Hi Lindsey! We have the original P90X which my husband bought probably 6 years ago. There are some great strength workouts on that too although I’ve never followed it’s full plan. You should check out Nicole at Fitness Fatale. She has an incredible story of using P90X to lose weight, and she and her hubby just started P90X3 too I believe. Good luck with your workouts! Keep me posted on what you think and I’ll do the same. xoxo

Jess @ Jess Runs ATL

Can’t wait to see your results! You’ve got this!

Carrie

So I’m a tad behind and find it highly amusing that I read this post on the day I had my first Shakeology. A friend gave me one if her packets because I’ve been intrigued. I’m aldo pushing the button on the 21 day fix and Shakeology special that’s going on. So excited to read your other posts and get some tips! Still can’t believe I’m doing this!!!

rUnladylike

That is so funny Carrie! I have been surprised by how much I’ve enjoyed it. I’m officially a huge fan. I can’t wait to hear what you think and how it goes for you! Good luck! Hugs to you and your family! xo

stefanie

I came across this and would LOVE your feedback. I am half way through Hammer and Chisel and I’ve been running as well (so far only 16 to 17 miles a week. but from dec 22 to feb 2 (started program jan 2) my weight, measurements and bf has gone up. wondering how you balance hammer and chisel with running and then what plan you do for nutrition…i’m considering stopping the running until H and C ends.

rUnladylike

Hi Stefanie,
I’ve found H & C to be a great strength training complement to running. To answer your question, you need to think about what your primary goal is. For me, I’m always more interested in maximizing running performance, so my H&C is to help me be a stronger runner, and my nutrition is such that I ensure I’m eating enough to run strong. If your goal is to lose weight, then that looks very different since you can’t maximize running performance and restrict calories at the same time. The short answer is that you need to do what works best for you since we’re all different. I’m very happy if I get in four runs and four H&C workouts and eat clean. I add an extra carb and fruit to my day as needed, and I don’t obsess about the containers. It’s more about eating clean and trying to portion better for me than it is about restricting calorie intake, especially if you have running goals. At some level we have to listen to our bodies and our intuition. The guidelines and structure are there to help us set goals, but then you will have to adjust those based on what works best for you. I hope that helps a little. Let me know if I can answer more questions, and definitely reach out to your coach to for help. Wishing you best of luck!!!

stefanie

wondering how you balance hammer and c and runs…i am 30 days in (started jan 2) and trg for 1/2 but all my numbers are up (weight, inches and bf) since being measured on dec 22. not sure if i’m doing to much and not eating enough or stressed or what’s going on and not sure how to fix it

Karsin Mielke

I have been trying to figure out balancing out running with H&C as well without too much DOMS between. The leg work is intense and can really tighten up the hamstrings if not stretched completely.
I was thinking of rotating Pilates and Yoga on H&C days and a long restortative stretch on off days.
If it is too much I will take a rest day and make the most of it.
Thanks for the excellent post!

MIchelle

What if you still have some fat to lose in your midsection will Hammer and Chisel help do that as well as tone and build muscle? I am 35 yr old female, 5’5 132 pounds but have a squishy tummy. Have been doing 21 day fix for a couple of months and want something more.

rUnladylike

Hi Michelle! I am a running coach but not a weight loss expert or medical professional, so I would always suggest you talk with your doctor or nutritionist about the best and safest weight loss plan for you. I do think Hammer and Chisel is a bit more challenging than some of the 21 Day Fix videos (although I like them too). I do think that H&C coupled with a really healthy, clean diet (like the containers) and added cardio via running, walking, cycling, etc. will yield great results. If you try it, I’d love to hear what you think. Best of luck on your health and weight loss journey. xo
