And Along Came rUnladylike

July 9, 2012

Welcome to rUnladylike! After many months of dreaming about starting a blog – and then many more working to get it ready – runladylike.com has officially launched! Today is an exciting day because it’s the first of what I hope will be a long and fun journey together of sharing running adventures, connecting with and learning from runners across the country and setting and achieving big goals!

My name is Jesica D’Avanza and I’m an everyday runner living and working in Atlanta. Running has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. It was passed down like a family tradition from my dad who was an elite track and field athlete. He instilled in me at an early age the expectations of striving for excellence, working to my full potential and believing I always have more left to give. Today, I’m on a mission to keep challenging myself to be better tomorrow than I was yesterday and to inspire other runners to do the same – by embracing our unique abilities, charting our own course and making our own rules.

The running blogger community is an incredible group of people who I’m motivated and inspired by every day. So why should you add rUnladylike to your list?

These are my promises to you:

  • This blog is for anyone who has an interest in living healthy and striving to be better tomorrow than you were yesterday. It isn’t just for runners. You don’t have to be fast (I’m not). You don’t have to have completed a zillion races or even 1 race. It’s for people looking to be the best version of themselves because everyone has the potential to be extraordinary.
  • I will always share my honest, real and uncensored (aka unladylike) adventures about what running teaches me about life and what life teaches me about running. All of the opinions expressed on this blog will be my own. I will always be truthful and will not be influenced by outside sources. If I ever write about products or brands, it’s because I use them regularly and believe they make me a better runner or triathlete.
  • I am FAR from perfect. I’m not a certified expert in, well, anything. My only claim to fame is that I’m really just like everyone else who’s trying to make it all happen without making excuses. Although I plan to share stories about overcoming barriers and achieving small victories, I’ll also admit when I fall off the wagon and feel challenged to follow my own advice.
  • This blog will not be a catch-all for anything on my mind. It will always be focused on fitness and health, with a primary emphasis on running. My goal is to post 3 times per week with content that is visual and adds value to your everyday life and training efforts. rUnladylike isn’t meant to be a personal running diary for me alone; it’s meant to be a shared journey that helps all of us achieve our goals.
  • When I say this blog is about my uncensored adventures, it also means I will not censor your thoughts or comments. Although I have to approve first-time commenters to ensure you aren’t spam, once approved, your comments will never be moderated. Unless there is severe profanity or discriminating language that would be highly offensive to my readers, you will always be encouraged to share your true feelings and thoughts. I want to know what you think – even if it’s unladylike. *wink*

I hope when you read my adventures, you’ll feel inspired and motivated. You’ll believe you’re capable of things you never thought possible and will share that with the world. You’ll know you can achieve any goal you set your mind to if you’re willing to work for it. You’ll figure out that it doesn’t matter what anyone else is doing or how fast anyone else is going. You’ll only compete against yourself. You’ll rUnladylike. And you’ll join me in the conversation. Here we go!

I’ve been trying to think of something unladylike to say, but all I can come up with is, “wow!” I rarely add someone to my reader on their first post, but you have just become the exception. I can already tell it’s going to be a fun run.

Debbie, I’m humbled beyond words. Thank you for being one of the first to read my blog. I’m so glad you like it and I’m sure you’ll have plenty of unladylike things to share with me soon *wink.* I’m looking forward to learning lots from others like you too! Here we go!!!

Thank you Shannon! I appreciate you following my journey and I hope you’ll share yours as well! An email subscription is something I plan to add ASAP. I’ll keep you posted as soon as I have that ready. Thanks again for the suggestion!

So excited to follow you on your adventures!

Yay Jesica!!! So proud of you! This blog is awesome, I could tell that after I read the first sentence. I can still remember back in elementary school when you helped “train” me for the yearly mile run in PE. You helped me shave 3 minutes off my time I think. Even back then you were motivating and inspiring others! 🙂

rUnladylike

Thank you so much Monicha! Your kind words mean so much to me! This memory cracked me up. I literally laughed out loud remembering that. I always wanted to beat the boys. That’s what always mattered. I’m not as fast as I was back in 5th grade, but I’m trying 😉 I hope you are doing great. Thanks so much for checking out my blog. Honored to have you as a reader 🙂

I saw a link on Emily Miller’s fb page and am so glad that she posted it. I’m excited about your new blogging adventures (love the mantras and motivation page too). I ran today for the first time in weeks and was feeling defeated by my lack of endurance, but feel encouraged tonight to keep working and stay strong.

Sarah,
Thank you so much for checking out my blog. I’m so glad to hear that you like it 🙂 It’s always hard to go on that first run after several weeks off. Just stick with it. That great feeling will come back to you sooner than you think … when your legs and lungs feel good! It takes some time to shake out the cob webs. We all feel that way after more than 5 days off. Heck, I felt that way on Sunday running in the heat! The bad running days are just as important as the good ones because we learn from every run and only get stronger. I hope you’ll keep me posted on your running adventures as well. Thanks so much for reading! Happy running!

Melissa

The blog looks great! Looking forward to following along 🙂

rUnladylike

Thanks Melissa! Excited to have you as a reader 🙂

Amy

Jessica, Congratulations on your new blog. Our mutual friend Becky forwarded me your email. I LOVE women who write blogs that inspire and follow several great tri/running blogs of which I will add yours to the list! We’ve done some of the same races – but it looks like we are both taking on our first Half Ironman at Augusta this year! Would love to connect and get together for a run, bike, coffee or whatever here in ATL. Best of luck to you on the blog and training. I will FB, Tweet and forward along the good mojo.

rUnladylike

Thank you so much Amy for checking out my blog and following along! I love to meet fellow runners and triathletes in the area. I’d love to get together for a training run or ride! I’m excited that you’re taking on your first half Ironman as well this year! I hope your training is going well. Send me a DM on Twitter or Facebook and we can plan something! Look forward to meeting you and thank you so much for your support!

rUnladylike

P.S. I’d love to hear more about your favorite running/tri bloggers! I always love reading and connecting with other inspiring everyday athletes!

Tina @ Best Body Fitness

LOVE the site!! Can’t wait to follow along and get to know you. 🙂

Thanks so much Tina! I love meeting fellow runners and Atlantans! Thanks so much for checking out my blog. I’m glad you like it! I look forward to following your journey too! We’ll have to meet up soon. xo

Jessica,

I found your blog through our mutual friend Brittany Lindquist. I love the name you chose for the blog and your writing and photos are excellent. As I read, I kept thinking how I agree with everything you have to say about life, inspiration, motivation, and strength. I’m a slow runner, but I love it (though I must admit I love tennis even more than running, and I love triathlons too!). When I trained for my first and only marathon, I kept repeating these mantras, which have stuck with me: “Doubt whom you will, but never doubt yourself,” and simply “You can do it!” (sometimes in Bela Karolyi voice a la the 96 Olympics) Keep it up and I look forward to more posts! 🙂

Sara,
Thank you so much for checking out my blog. I’m so glad it has resonated with you. That means a lot to me! It doesn’t matter how fast or slow you run, you are still a runner and that makes you great! I’m glad you’ve found a passion in running (and tennis) :). I love your mantra about not doubting yourself. I will definitely have to remember that! Thanks again for your support. Please keep me posted on your adventures. Thanks again for following!
