Remembering Why I Run after Rise.Run.Retreat.

October 4, 2016

It was a clear October morning. The weather had finally started to release from summer’s sweltering grasp into a briskness that felt like fall. I wasn’t used to waking up this early to run. I set my alarm for 6 a.m. (a time that would later feel like sleeping in on Saturdays and would soon become reserved for my weekly long run). I quietly tip-toed out of the house and into my car. I drove about 20 minutes to meet a crowd of strangers for my first ever group run. Would I be able to keep up? Would they be nice? Could I really do this? Lots of thoughts were swirling through my head as I pulled into the parking lot where runners in florescent tops and colorful shoes were gathered together.

“Hi, I’m Jesica. I emailed with you last week,” I chirped to a woman who looked like she was in charge. She introduced me to a group of people who were planning to run the same pace I thought would be comfortable for me, and off we went. I was surprised at how easily I fell in line with the group and how friendly people were. A man who was a little younger than my dad started chatting with me. I soon knew all about his running journey and what he was currently training for. I was the only one who had never run a half marathon or marathon, and I was a sponge soaking up their energy and knowledge. Although I felt like an outsider on that first meeting, I instantly knew there was something special about running with other people.

Those strangers soon became friends. We ran every Tuesday and Saturday together for nearly five years. We pushed each other, cheered each other along, planned races together and were always game to sit in a Starbucks for an hour after conquering a 21-mile run. Those strangers gave me a gift that changed my life. They showed me the power that comes from relationships built through long distance running. They also showed me that together, we can do anything we set our hearts and minds to.

This past weekend was no different as I gathered together with nine other women in the mountains of Vermont for the second annual Rise.Run.Retreat. I was reminded, once again, why I run and why I love running. It is the sense of community we share. It is strangers who almost instantly become friends. It is the common understanding we have where no one really needs to explain themselves because we already know what they are going through, both the highs and the lows.

When you cover miles together, you share something that you may never share with your closest friends and family who don’t run long distances. It sounds so dramatic, but that’s because it is. These friendships and relationships have propelled me to do some things with my body that I never thought were possible and achieve goals that seemed way out of reach. They have profoundly changed my life. And I may never have found them if I hadn’t gotten up at 6 a.m. on that October day in 2009 and driven to meet the group of strangers in a Starbucks parking lot.

Fast-forward to 2014. My dear friend Sarah and I (someone I also met through running) were in the car driving to meet another group of strangers at a running conference in Savannah, Georgia. We both agreed that we wished we could bottle up the inspiration that comes from being with such strong and powerful runners who make us better. We wanted to find a way to connect in person more often, to experience the power that comes from the connectedness of sharing a love of running. She said, we need to host a running retreat. I said, I’m in.

That vision is now a reality with Rise.Run.Retreat. She and I host 10-15 female runners in inspiring locations each fall for an intimate weekend of running and fitness. But what it’s really about is the laughter, the conversation, the bonding that happens when it’s way past our bedtime and we can’t pull ourselves off the couch to stop talking.

How amazing are these custom bags L.L. Bean made for all our attendees and gave to everyone. So grateful to have them as a sponsor two years in a row.

I will share all the details with you in the coming days, like the great things we learned from nutrition and strength training sessions we hosted. I’ll tell you about the half marathon we ran (well, I spectated at 26 weeks pregnant of course, but I did run about 11 total miles during the weekend). I’ll show you the meals we cooked and the swag we gave everyone and the funny moments we shared.

But for now, I’m simply going to relish in the friendships that ignite my spirit that only come when you run together … when you travel down the road side by side on a journey to do things that shouldn’t be possible. These women are my role models and my sole sisters. These women are what running is all about.

The laughter and the kindness and the passion for sport filled my cup this weekend. Now I need to scheme a way to visit you in Florida. Much love sweet friend!

rUnladylike

Yes!!! Please come to Florida. You can bring the whole fam and we will have the best time! You can even bring some chickens along for the ride. LOL! Hugs.

angela @ happy fit mama

Yup. Tearing up over here. You said it so well – when I started running, I never knew how much running would give me. The friendships were a bonus and definitely something I cherish the most. I think Sandra, Sarah and I should take a road trip to Florida. We can pick up the other East Coast girls along the way! Thank you so much for dreaming up this wonderful retreat!

rUnladylike

Yes, yes and yes to a Florida road trip. That would be amazing! One year you guys will have to come down to run the Gasparilla Half Marathon and stay with me (it’s always in February). I’m so grateful running and the Internet have brought us together. So thankful for your friendship and our Rise.Run.Retreat. memories. xoxo

Kara A. Forrest

I truly don’t even know where to begin with how to put my emotions from this weekend into words. This retreat was incredible! I loved the warmth of friendships and supportive energy that filled the air at the retreat. I am in awe of how much planning, organizing and executing that you and Sarah accomplished. It just goes to show that dreams can and do come true! Grateful for getting to know you this weekend, thank you for the friendship! ((hugs)) and be safe this weekend with the weather!!

rUnladylike

Thank you so much Kara. I’m so glad you were able to join us this year and thrilled that you had such a special experience. It was such a joy getting to know you and spending the weekend together. xoxo

Laura @ This Runner's Recipes

You said it all perfectly! Never did I anticipate such meaningful friendships when I started running or blogging. I wish I could just hop on a plane again this weekend to run, chat, and laugh with everyone. You and all the women on the retreat are the most authentic, kind, funny, intelligent, and inspiring women I have had the privilege of knowing. Thank you for bringing us together!

rUnladylike

Please do hop on a plane and come run (er run/walk) with me in FL!!! I am so grateful we finally got to meet and loved every minute of our time together. Hopefully I’ll get out west again soon so we can meet up. Can’t wait to see you crush CIM in a few weeks. xo

Danielle @ Wild Coast Tales

I loved following along part of the retreat on Instagram. I’ve only really got involved in a running community over this past year and I think what astounds me the most is HOW much runners just want to support each other. When I ran my first half last November, so many people I barely knew offered to run it with me. During my first marathon, friends waited at km 32 cheering loudly. Those memories mean so much to me and I’m so grateful for the friendships I’ve been able to form through running!

rUnladylike

Thanks so much for following along our adventures Danielle! The running community is truly amazing. I’m glad you’ve found it to be that way for you too. xoxo

Laura

It’s so true- running relationships are extra special! Those people “get us” like no one else can. I was so bummed to miss out on the retreat this year- but happy for all of you to gather together again! Hoping to be there next year. I need my running girls community and the emotional boost that comes with it!

rUnladylike

We missed you Laura!!!!

Amanda N

Groups runs can really change your life! I’ve met some wonderful people through both my local running club and my local MRTT chapter. Finding people who will push you, slow down with you, get up early with you, cheer you on, or give you a kick in the butt, etc – the running community truly is awesome. I can only image how awesome the retreat was with you and Sarah behind it all!

rUnladylike

They so do Amanda. It’s amazing how powerful running with others can truly be … and the bonds we develop over those hours and miles is truly something. Thanks for your kind words. xoxo

Natalie

I don’t even know where to begin Jes…
You are such a shining light. Your kind and joyful heart draws everyone in and makes them feel so at ease.
I am so blessed to have met you this weekend!!! Grateful for our talks, our running and walking at the race and of course our epic adventure at the airport!!! How awesome to have that time on the plane together!!
Thank you so much for including me in this amazing weekend. You and Sarah have created this force of beautiful women runners and the bonds we have all made will last forever.
Can’t wait till we meet again. Jerold has always wanted to visit Florida, so it won’t be hard to plan a trip there. Miss you friend!! Take care of that sweet baby!!! xoxo

rUnladylike

One of my very favorite parts of Rise.Run.Retreat. was meeting you. I absolutely LOVED getting to know you. You are such a beautiful person inside and out, and you have one of the kindest hearts and souls I know. I need us to close the gap from the east coast to the west coast so I can see you more. I guess this means more California vacas for Mr. rUnladylike and me. All the hugs. xoxo

Sue @ This Mama Runs for Cupcakes

Tears are rolling. This weekend was truly amazing and I am so impressed by you. The fact that we had never met and we ran and chatted and never ran out of things to say is truly awesome. There are no other words. The running community is truly awesome. Starting Moms Run This Town was the start of my love for the running community and the bonds that it creates and I will forever be grateful for that. It was so amazing to meet you and spend time with you and I can’t wait till we get to meet again!! Wishing you all of the best for the rest of your pregnancy!!! XOXO

rUnladylike

I am so so grateful this special weekend brought us together. It was a true honor to be able to spend it with you and to get to know you. Already counting down the months until we are all together again. xoxo
