Fall Favorites

October 1, 2014

Can you hear it? That big, collective “Ahhhhhh?” That’s the sound of runners everywhere breathing a huge sigh of relief that fall is officially here. We now have hope that the worst of the heat and humidity is behind us (says the girl from Atlanta where today’s high was still 81 degrees Fahrenheit and the humidity was at 89 percent) and that we’ll get to enjoy some of our best running of the year as the temperatures turn from hot to cool.

Each month, I share my favorite finds for running, triathlon and general fitness that are helping me train and race happy, motivated and healthy. During September, I discovered some new must-haves to wear, eat and listen to.

Fall favorites

1. Momentum Jewelry Foot Notes
Momentum Jewelry’s Foot Notes are officially my new favorite running accessory, and everyone who knows me in real life should get ready for this to be my go-to running gift. We all know that the mental aspect of our training is as important as all the miles we run and our physical preparation. Finding ways to remind ourselves that we are strong and courageous and brave is something I love to do. These Foot Notes are the perfect reminder of your favorite running mantra or a positive phrase to keep with you while running. One goes on your left foot and the other goes on your right. You can choose from a number of sayings or create your own. I first discovered these when I went to FitBloggin’ in June. Several of the runners I met had these on their shoes and/or were wearing one of their bracelets (which are also super cool, by the way). I finally went on their website a few weeks ago and bought 5 pairs – one for me and 4 for several for my friends who have big races coming up. I gifted them to a few of my friends who competed in IRONMAN Chattanooga on Sunday to remind them that they would finish strong. These retail at $19.99, and you can often find coupons on running blogs. I’m going to think about finishing strong next weekend in Chicago!

2. Brooks Running LSD Lite Jacket IV
The Brooks Running LSD Lite Jacket IV comes in men’s and women’s versions and is a great, lightweight layer when the weather is less than stellar. It’s windproof and water-resistant and has 2 side zip pockets to keep things like phones, IDs and other items dry. I have the LSD Lite Jacket III, and the main difference with the IV is that it doesn’t have a hood, which I like (sometimes you want one, sometimes you don’t). What I like most about this jacket is how light it is, yet how warm it keeps you. It only weighs about 3 ounces, and yet, it can keep you really insulated from cold wind and rain. I also love how reflective it is. Check out this photo of me at IRONMAN Chattanooga last weekend with my friend Teesha at 6 a.m. before the swim start. It was dark, but I was lighting up in this jacket, which is great for cars and other vehicles to spot you while you’re pounding the pavement early. It also rained for about 90 minutes during the race, and this kept my core warm and dry. My jacket is white and pink, but it comes in a variety of colors. The only thing about the white is that it’s pretty translucent, so if you don’t want to see your bottom layers, stick with a darker color. The jacket retails at $90.

3. Siggi’s Vanilla Yogurt
Last month I discovered Siggi’s Vanilla Yogurt. Oh my God. This stuff is heaven if you’re a yogurt lover. Yogurt is one of my favorite things to eat after a short workout because of the carbs and protein it delivers. While I love Greek yogurt, finding some that isn’t plain without a tone of sugar is like searching for a needle in a haystack. I recently discovered Siggi’s in the organic section of my grocery store (they sell it at places like Whole Foods too and on Amazon) and I am in love. Siggi’s is made from Scandinavian dairy traditions and is a traditional Icelandic yogurt. It is thicker than thick. They have a whole host of flavors (which you can see here) but I’m a fan of the vanilla because the ingredients are: pasteurized skim milk, organic agave nectar, Madagascar bourbon vanilla and live active cultures (B. lactis, L. acidophilus, L. delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus, L. delbrueckii subsp. lactis, S. thermophiles). One cup contains 100 calories, 0 fat, 11 grams of carbs, 9 grams of sugar and 14 grams of protein, and they only use mile from farmers who don’t use growth hormones. The label on their cups is also recyclable. It’s way more expensive than most yogurt brands, but it is delicious and healthier than a lot of options.

4. Oberto All Natural Original Beef Jerky
Ok, ok. I know this is somewhat of a random pick for September, but Oberto’s All Natural Original Beef Jerky is seriously one of my favorite snacks (in moderation). This is one of the only beef jerky products I can find in regular stores that has all natural ingredients that you can actually pronounce and know what they are. The original flavor is delicious and I love that this brand has been out supporting the endurance community. I first tried this at the Ragnar Atlanta Trail Relay back in April and I was reminded of how delicious it is when it was being handed out at IRONMAN Chattanooga last weekend. If you’re looking for an on-the-go snack with some protein and salt that you can carry with you anywhere, this is a great option.

5. Taylor Swift’s Shake it Off
This is one of my favorite songs on my running playlist at the moment.

6. Nickelback’s What Are You Waiting For?
This is one of my most inspirational songs on my playlist at the moment. I love the lyrics.

Note: I am a Brooks Running Run Happy Ambassador and receive regular products for free from them to try, including my Lite Jacket IV. No one asked me to write about any of the other products featured. They are things I have tried and love. I do receive a small percentage of commission on purchases made at Amazon from links to this site. Every post about a product on runladylike.com is my uncensored opinion and always will be. You only get the honest version of everything here.

Have you tried any of my September fall favorites? If so, what do you think about them? What are your favorite running or fitness finds right now?

Absolutely love that jacket! It’s still too hot here to even think about wearing jackets, but that one might be on my list.

I finally listened to Shake It Off in completion in the last two weeks, and now I can’t get it out of my head!

Oh my gosh, I too just discovered Siggi’s and I’m in LOVE! I don’t think I’ll ever buy Chobani again! I tried the Pumpkin flavor and it was amazing, but vanilla is more of my standard as well. And, I also have the “Finish Strong” footnotes from momentum. Love those ladies and their jewelry!!
