Let It Snow Hyperice Giveaway

December 17, 2013

Every Tuesday in December, I’m giving away awesome running gear and gadgets I love to help you run happier in the New Year. Today, I’m launching my second Weekly December Holiday Running Gift-Away. Last week, I gifted a running hat, arm warmers and gloves from Brooks Running to keep you warm during the winter (congrats to Carson P. from Alabama who won!). This week, I’m going from warming you up to chilling you out with an incredible gift from Hyperice.

I first learned about Hyperice in November when the team sent me one of their devices to try. Hyperice offers a knee, shoulder, back and multi-purpose device that simultaneously deliver compression and cold therapy to help athletes recover quicker, enhance muscle and joint performance and aid in injury prevention.

I must admit: I was initially skeptical. Do runners really need to pay for a device to ice our sore muscles? Don’t our Ziploc bags full of ice work just fine?

The answer is … we all need a Hyperice device! This is one of my favorite finds of 2013 – so good that it even made my holiday gift guide for runners and triathletes. My Hyperice Utility device has completely changed my ability to more effectively ice the sore parts of my body. I’m obsessed with it; especially in how much easier it now is for me to ice my feet and calves!

How Hyperice works: Each device is made of a soft compression wrap that attaches to a removable latex ice cell.

  • Crush ice and put it into the cell. I fill up a cup of crushed ice several times and dump the ice into the cell.
  • Screw the top on the ice cell, and push the air release button on the top of the cap to push out the excess air trapped in the cell, forming an “ice cast” around the area you’re icing.
  • Place the cell on your body part that’s sore. Use the Velcro straps on the compression wrap to tighten it around your body part. When icing, do not leave ice on for more than 15 to 20 minutes. Wait at least 20 minutes before icing the same area again.
  • I was able to alternate the device from my right foot, to my right calf, to my left foot and then my left calf and back to my feet (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) for 90 minutes with the ice still cold and frozen.

This is me icing my foot and calf after a long run. You can also see on the far right how the ice cell conforms to your leg or body part.

No more plastic bags slipping off your leg or leaking all over your couch or bed!

The only downside for me is that I wish I had 2 so I could ice both legs at the same time! Also, they are on the pricier side ($90-$130), but they are worth every penny!

Nice giveaway! People forget that recovering well is just as important as training.

David Burns

Frank

utility device

Maureen

I’d pick the utility device!

Britton

I would definitely use the back one! I am always have issues with my lower back and this would really come in handy.

J.R.

Utility device! Could use that to help combat foot tendinitis.

elizabeth

love this!! wish i would’ve known about it post surgery (i like what the doc prescribed, but this is easier)! either utility or back

Kevin

Looks like the utlity would be the most usefull

Amie

I’d choose the utility device!

Lee

I would pick the one for the knee. In 2014, I will be training for my first Ironman, so my knees will probably need something for recovery after logging all the planned miles!

Caitlin

After spending much of the last two weeks balancing a bag of ice on my left knee due to a combination of ITBS and runner’s knee (thanks, marathon training) I am at the point at which I would probably do very bad things to get my hands on the one for the knee.

ASH

You are awesome for sharing this Jes. What a great idea! Since I can’t do head, shoulders, knees and toes, I will go with the back…cuz allz baby got back

Erica

I’d definitely pick the knee. My right knee can be a pain from time to time and since I’m training for a tri in June I’ll need it!

Laurel C

I would like the one for my knee!

Carson

This is so cool! I would pick one for my knee. I tend to ice them more than anything else.

Al

I could definitely use one of those!

Marcia (@TooCuteRunner)

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE the Knee one!!! Would be a perfect addition to recovery gear!

Bill B

looks like a great device, bet just about everyone could use a utility device for sure.

Hanna

This would be awesome for the half I’m training for this spring!

Denise

Knee device. I had surgery on my knee earlier this year, and I would love this for flair ups!

Mandy

This would be an amazing Christmas present for my boyfriend. He is just starting to run but has some knee problems (he had torn his meniscus. So the knee on would be so wonderful to get for him!

Sara

Right shoulder! I have constant ache in that shoulder from sitting on the computer all day, and hunching over on my bike doesn’t help much either!

Tina G

i need one for my piriformus (haha) but prob the calf one would be awesome!

Rebecca H

Utility device 🙂

Kristen L @ DYL

I would probably choose either the utility or knee one. My calves and knees seem to run into the most trouble as I’m working through my training.

Brandy

Hard to choose but I’d go for the knee.

Ramona S

I would like the one for my knee. My knee would be so happy with it lol

Anne

Easy. Knee. Then I’d get a matching one for the other knee 🙂

Betsy

I would love the utility device!

Scott

I’d probably go with the knee one. I thankfully haven’t had many problems/pain while running yet, but my knees are the one area where I have had a bit.

Lisa N.

I’d want the utility device for my ankle/achilles. Hopefully it could also be used for my knee too.

Marissa

How awesome! I know so many people who could use one of these- well myself, BUT also more importantly my husband. He has back problems and had surgery on his legs twice, ankle one so whenever he exercises he has to ice like CRAZY! Thanks for sharing. Oh, and I would pick utility because of the versatility I think 🙂

Marissa

Wait…I don’t see a widget? 🙁

rUnladylike

Marissa,
You should see a box below the instructions that has the name of the contest and an action for you to take. If you still don’t see it, please email me at runladylike.com. It is showing and workiń normally.

Janelle J

Since I’m icing my right knee as I type this, I would definitely love to win the knee device! What a great giveaway!

Laura @losingrace

I think I would go for the foot one. My feet tend to swell really bad after long runs/hard races so I have to ice them anyways!

meredith

I like the utility

Raechel Soicher

I would love a Back hyperice. I am on my feet all day as a teacher and often suffer from lower back pain after running.

Ben J

I’d want the knee device. Sounds like you can use that one for most of your leg, which is nice.

Kristen M

I’d select a hyperice for my knee which is where I’m usually nursing an injury.

Beth

Oh I want the utility one for my heels! Also, why can’t I see the widget? It’s probably b/c I’m on IE 8 at work. Lame!

rUnladylike

IE 8 must be the problem. Pull it up on your phone and you’ll be able to see it 🙂 IE 9, Firefox, Google Chrome and Safari should all work 🙂

Kristin @ A Mom on the Run

Definitely the utility one — I have a nagging case of achilles tendonitis that will NOT go away!

ChristyS

I would pick the knee hyperice since I have to ice my knees more than any other part, though the utility for my Achilles would be heaven too!

Robi

I would pick the back one, there are several times after a run or long bike ride that it would have been a handy tool to have.

jess

oh yes please! I broke my foot last week (dog tripped me down the stairs!) and I have been icing vigilantly in an attempt to help the swelling go down. Looks like the utility pack would fit over my fourth and fifth metatarsals juuuuuust right.

rUnladylike

Oh no, Jess!!! I’m so sorry to hear that. I’m glad you’re ok! Good luck!

Ange @ Cowgirl Runs

Definitely the utility device, I’m a klutz so I’ll need to ice more than one area!

Rachel O

Probably the knee or utility one!

Tiffany S.

I would like the knee one because I have a pair of very cranky knees!

Stacey s

I think I wd go w the utility device!

Tricia

I’d love the utility device!

Mindi

utility

Kristi L

I would also pick the utility device for my feet.

Katherine

The air removal/casting part looks really interesting! I’d go utility ftw 😉

Mark V

The utility device! It looks awesome since it could be used for all sorts of recovery.

Victor Mariano

It would be the knee for me. that is my weakness
